Medical Marijuana History in Maine

On Nov. 02, 1999, “Ballot Question 2,” which is the “Maine Medical Marijuana Act,” was approved by 61% of voters and enacted its effectivity on December 22, 1999.

Under the amended “Senate Bill 611,” the one and one-quarter (1.25) ounces of allowable usable marijuana a person may possess has been increased to two and one-half (2.5) ounces, signed into law on April 02, 2002.

Background checks on caregivers and those who are associated with dispensaries were integrated by the Division of Licensing & Regulatory Services on August of 2010.

Enacted without the governor’s signature on June 26, 2013, under the amended “LD 1062,” Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been added to the list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana use.
